Judge Sonia Rash Hosts Free “Wills & Probate” Seminar, Drawing Strong Community Participation

Greatwood and surrounding-area residents attend an informative legal education program, featuring expert presentations, an interactive Q&A session, and information about a new free Legal Kiosk service

SUGAR LAND, Texas: Fort Bend County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3, Place 1, Judge Sonia Rash, hosted a free public educational seminar on “Wills & Probate” on Thursday, September 17, at the Greatwood Recreation Center. The program drew a strong turnout of residents from Greatwood and surrounding communities.

One of the most noticeable aspects of the evening was the seriousness with which attendees approached the subject. Many participants appeared to be senior citizens, including people in their 60s and 70s. Several came prepared with notebooks and pens and carefully took notes throughout the presentations, reflecting the practical importance of wills, probate, inheritance, and estate planning for individuals and families.

Legal professionals used detailed presentations and on-screen examples to explain wills and probate in clear, accessible language. Among the subjects discussed were the differences between a traditional formal will and a holographic will, the importance of selecting an executor, revoking previous wills, including a residuary clause for assets not specifically mentioned in a will, and keeping the original document in a safe and accessible location.

Attorney Libby King, Claudia Eubanks, Gretchen Yax and McCollum were among those who contributed to the educational program, providing information and practical guidance on various aspects of the subject.

The seminar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session. Participants raised thoughtful questions concerning property, inheritance, family circumstances, and the probate process. The discussion proved particularly valuable because answers to individual questions often provided useful information for everyone in attendance.

Judge Rash: Estate Planning Is Not Only for the Wealthy

In her remarks, Judge Sonia Rash emphasized an important misconception surrounding wills: a person does not have to be wealthy or own extensive property to benefit from having a will.

Even someone whose principal assets consist of a home, a vehicle, or relatively modest property can benefit from planning ahead. Proper estate planning can provide greater clarity for surviving family members and may help reduce unnecessary legal complications after a person’s death.

Her message to the community was straightforward: rather than leaving the next generation to navigate uncertainty, court proceedings, and potentially significant legal expenses, individuals should educate themselves and consider making appropriate arrangements while they are able to do so.

New Legal Kiosk Brings Free Legal Guidance Closer to the Community

Judge Rash also highlighted another significant community initiative: a Legal Kiosk that has now been established after a multi-year effort.

The kiosk is designed to make legal assistance more accessible to residents. During designated hours, members of the public can use the facility to connect virtually with legal professionals, discuss their questions, and receive guidance concerning their legal issues.

The service is particularly meaningful for residents who may have difficulty obtaining immediate access to an attorney or who need help understanding where to begin with a legal matter. Judge Rash explained that the service is available to the community free of charge, representing an important step toward making basic legal guidance more accessible.

The establishment of the kiosk also reflects a broader idea behind the evening’s seminar: courts can serve the public not only after a legal problem develops, but also by providing information that may help people understand and address issues earlier.

Community Participation

The event was coordinated with the assistance of Saba June , an assistant to Judge Rash, whose efforts contributed to the organization of the program.

Among those attending were A. Rehman Patel, Aamir Sabzwari and Sofia Sheikh, along with numerous community members and residents of Greatwood and surrounding neighborhoods.

The strong attendance demonstrated that there is substantial public interest in practical legal education, particularly on subjects that eventually affect nearly every family.

The Wills & Probate seminar was therefore more than simply a legal presentation. It represented a useful connection between the justice system and the people it serves. Providing understandable legal information before a problem becomes a dispute can help individuals make better-informed decisions and potentially spare their families unnecessary confusion later.

Perhaps the evening’s most meaningful lesson could be expressed simply:

A will is not merely a document about death. It is an act of planning by a living person to leave greater clarity, order, and peace of mind for the family that remains.
